Busano Community Initiative (BCI) is committed to improving the well-being of at-risk families and orphans in rural Uganda through education, access to clean water, food security, hygiene, and sustainable livelihood development.

Jude Nkaaba & his Twin Sister Mary (both 25y) founded the Initiative, so that many children could get access to quality education, are enabled to seize the many opportunities ahead and to become responsible and productive citizens.

In rural Uganda, education remains out of reach for many children. Nearly half of Uganda’s population is under the age of 15, and children and youth together make up over 70% of the population. In Kamuli District, where Nawanyago and other rural communities are located, these patterns hold true, placing enormous pressure on schools, teachers, and infrastructure. Even with government programs in place, poverty, hidden schooling costs, and long journeys to distant schools prevent countless students from learning. Those who do attend often face overcrowded classrooms, too few teachers, and poor infrastructure — leading to high dropout rates and limited opportunities.

Busano Community is working to change this.
We invest in building schools closer to families, providing access to clean water, food security, hygienic and educational resources, supporting teachers, and using ICT to bridge rural–urban divides. Our mission is to give every child, especially from at-risk families, the chance to learn, grow, and thrive.

Our Goals & Progress

We construct a larger school in Nawanyago on a new site, providing education to children from low-income families—including orphans—who cannot afford school fees. The school will also offer on-site accommodation for students as well a a regenerative school garden.

We have established strong partnerships and friendships to achieve our Goals. We are grateful to work with

It all started with a pen pal relationship. Anja Lenz in Germany, who was looking for pen pals for her two children, met Jude on Facebook and their initial contact was established. At the time, he was caring for two boys of the same age in Uganda, who then began writing to Johan and Mailo. Over time, Anja and Kai learned more and more about Jude’s story, his school project, and the orphanage in Uganda. Jude told them about his idea of buying a piece of land on which to build a new school with an attached orphanage.
It quickly became clear that closer cooperation was needed, and so Jude visited the two of them in January 2022.

During the visit, there were many meetings with individuals and organizations already active in development cooperation. This provided valuable information that demonstrated that there are indeed funding opportunities for such projects, but that they require the establishment of an association.
This was an exciting experience for all three, and it sparked the idea of establishing an association.

Together with our Friends for Busano Association, we could gratefully receive additional funding through:

Schmitz-Stiftung

Fly & Help Foundation

Direct Trade Route Busano Coffee

Our friends at ktopia.eu support us with web hosting, web design and training to run our website as BCI

We recognize that donors and support partners have finite resources and attention so their capacity to give is not constant. Busano Community Initiative has an exit strategy from donor dependence where we have created a proactive strategy to ensure self sufficiency after a couple of years.

We are currently looking for additional partners in our sustainability projects to enable our schools generate their own structural income to finance their expenditure.

Aquired in 2024

Aquiring land for the new school & orphanage.

We were able to acquire the property at the beginning of 2024. It’s located deep in the village, far from the main road. The location offers the advantage of eliminating the long commute for many children.

Project completed in August 2025

Save Access to Clean water, nearby, all year…

The burden of collecting water disproportionately falls on women and girls. Long and often dangerous journeys to water sources put them at risk of physical harm and sexual violence. BCI in partnership with the Schmitz Stiftung through FFB were able to finance a motorised well (hand-pump borehole) which is actually the first one in the village to be drilled so deep and can not go dry in drought conditions or after a long time.

This necessitated the formation of a water committee for maintenance and sustainability and this will serve both the school and community. Next to the borehole is a shade, where people can wait from and actually hold conversations about the community and other matters other than standing for so long. We also put a solar light station which enables collecting of water even at night. This was majorly aimed at enabling school children work with ease and efficiency.

First Construction Phase

E_WEB_02

We build classrooms, a school kitchen, and a sanitary building.

The Busano Community Initiative under the Project Lead Alexander, a civil engineer, has finished paperwork. Initial discussions have taken place with the licensing authorities and we began to build in October 2025.

Thanks to the support of Fly & Help, our partners from the Busano Community Initiative were able to begin preparations for the school construction last week. This week, the plans were transferred from the construction drawings to the site. The foundation trenches are now complete, and the strip footings have been laid. Every day, progress is being made, and now the first stones have been laid. The construction workers are camping on site and providing their own meals in a small, makeshift kitchen. It’s wonderful to witness the growth of the dream we began three years ago with our small association. We’d like to share with you in a loose series of updates to see how everything develops.

School Garden

We are looking for sponsors and partners who can help us finance establishment of a standard school garden. Your support will enable BCI to set up a standard school garden majorly in food production where we will grow beans, corns, vegetables which will enable the school from incurring daily costs of procuring food and can also supplement school meals enabling children get a balanced diet useful for their healthy. Our approach here will ensure integration of food production directly into the learning environment creating a virtuous cycle of education, improved health and community empowerment that can endure for generations.

Dairy, Poultry and piggery

Dairy production remains one of the strongest agricultural sub sectors in the country driven by ready market for both milk and beef among the very high profit rate of the venture. BCI intends to massively invest in this venture by establishing a dairy farm which milk alone is estimated to be just sufficient for salaries of all our school staff. The dairy farm will also be a powerful engine for community development and poverty alleviation where the impact goes beyond farmers themselves creating jobs in related sectors and enabling our children learn a livelihood. If you are interested in learning more about the potential of this venture, email us for a detailed implementation strategy.
